Overview:
Seeking an experienced and highly organized Lab Manager to lead all aspects of laboratory operations at our Arizona facility. This role is responsible for supervising laboratory technicians, overseeing the formulation and blending of asphalt products, maintaining equipment and supplies, and ensuring full compliance with AMRL/AASHTO laboratory certification standards.
The Lab Manager will work closely with the Arizona marketing and technical sales team to support product development and customer requirements, ensuring timely and accurate testing of materials such as asphalt emulsions, polymer-modified asphalt (PMA), and performance-graded (PG) binders.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise day-to-day laboratory activities, including testing, blending, and quality control of asphalt products.
- Manage, train, and schedule lab technicians to ensure high performance and productivity.
- Ensure adherence to all testing procedures per AASHTO, ASTM, and DOT specifications.
- Maintain up-to-date AMRL/AASHTO certification and prepare for annual audits and proficiency testing.
- Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and functioning per standard protocols.
Product Formulation & Blending
- Oversee and adjust formulations for asphalt emulsions, PMA, and PG binders to meet technical specifications and customer requirements.
- Assist in trial blends, product development, and performance testing of new or modified products.
- Document and track blending data, results, and formulation updates in accordance with internal QA/QC systems.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with the Arizona marketing team to support customer needs, product inquiries, and performance claims.
- Provide technical support to operations, logistics, and sales teams as needed.
- Participate in customer site visits or troubleshooting when technical support is required.
- Supplies & Inventory
- Manage lab supply inventory and place timely orders for chemicals, reagents, sample containers, PPE, and testing materials.
Qualifications:
- 3–5+ years of laboratory experience in asphalt materials, construction materials testing, or related industry.
- 2+ years of supervisory or team lead experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of AMRL, AASHTO, and ASTM testing standards and certifications.
- Hands-on experience with asphalt product blending and formulation (emulsions, PMA, PG binders).
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, lead a team, and manage multiple deadlines.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with lab data management software a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred (experience may substitute for degree).
