Summary:
The Asphalt Paving Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, coordination, and performance of multiple asphalt paving and milling crews. This role oversees 4–6 asphalt paving crews and 3–5 milling crews, each led by a Foreman or Superintendent. The Paving Manager ensures work is executed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards while driving profitability and continuous improvement across all operations.
This is a senior field leadership role that balances hands-on operational knowledge with planning, scheduling, cost control, and team development.
Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Provide leadership and direction to all paving and milling crews through Foremen and Superintendents
- Set expectations for safety, quality, production, and accountability
- Serve as the primary escalation point for field challenges and operational decisions
Scheduling & Planning
- Develop and manage daily, weekly, and long-range schedules for paving and milling operations
- Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, trucking, and subcontractors
- Work closely with plant, logistics, estimating, and project management teams to align production with demand
Quality Control
- Ensure all work meets company standards, project specifications, and customer expectations
- Monitor mix designs, laydown practices, compaction, and finished product quality
- Address quality issues promptly and implement corrective actions
Financial Performance
- Responsible for productivity, job cost performance, and profitability across all crews
- Track production rates, labor costs, equipment utilization, and material usage
- Identify inefficiencies and implement improvements to drive margin performance
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all crews
- Ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, and jobsite requirements
- Participate in safety meetings, audits, and incident investigations
People Development
- Mentor and develop Foremen, Superintendents, and future leaders
- Participate in hiring, performance management, and disciplinary actions as needed
- Build strong, cohesive teams with a focus on retention and engagement
Communication & Coordination
- Act as the primary liaison between field operations and senior leadership
- Provide regular updates on schedules, production, risks, and results
- Maintain strong relationships with customers, inspectors, and internal stakeholders
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in asphalt paving operations, with multi-crew leadership experience
- Strong understanding of asphalt paving and milling methods, equipment, and materials
- Proven ability to manage schedules, people, and job costs across multiple crews
- Financial acumen with experience driving productivity and profitability
- Excellent leadership, communication, and decision-making skills
- Ability to work long hours and adapt to changing schedules and jobsite demands
- Valid driver’s license; CDL a plus (if applicable)
