Overview:
Mid-sized Metals Recycling company seeks a Transportation Supervisor for their trucking operations in the Mid-Atlantic region. This position will have overall responsibility for the day-to-day performance of the transportation operation, including fleet readiness and maintenance, driver and dispatch supervision, vendor management, and operational coordination. The current fleet consists of approximately seven trucks with additional equipment expected as the operation continues to grow.
The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader with experience managing trucking or transportation operations who can keep the fleet running reliably while effectively leading drivers and dispatch personnel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the daily operations and performance of the trucking and transportation function.
- Lead and manage a team of drivers and dispatch personnel, ensuring effective scheduling, communication, safety, and performance.
- Maintain responsibility for the condition, reliability, and operational readiness of the truck fleet and associated equipment.
- Manage preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, and service schedules to minimize downtime and maximize fleet availability.
- Coordinate with outside repair facilities, dealerships, parts suppliers, and service vendors, including reviewing repair needs, costs, and service quality.
- Monitor fleet utilization, equipment downtime, maintenance costs, and overall transportation performance.
- Respond to breakdowns and operational issues, coordinating resources to minimize service disruptions.
- Maintain appropriate fleet maintenance, inspection, and repair records and support applicable DOT and transportation compliance requirements.
- Partner with operations and dispatch to ensure driver and equipment availability meets daily business needs.
- Support the continued growth and expansion of the fleet, including the addition and deployment of new trucks and equipment.
- Promote a safe, organized, and accountable transportation operation.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in transportation, trucking, fleet management, dispatch, equipment maintenance, or a related operational environment preferred.
- Previous supervisory or management experience with drivers, dispatchers, or transportation personnel.
- Strong understanding of commercial truck maintenance, preventive maintenance programs, inspections, and repair coordination.
- Experience managing third-party maintenance vendors and service providers.
- Working knowledge of DOT requirements and commercial fleet safety practices preferred.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple operational priorities.
