Position Summary:
The Director of Health & Safety provides strategic leadership in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organization’s health, safety, and environmental (HSE) programs. This individual is responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations while fostering a culture where employee safety and operational excellence are top priorities. The role partners closely with leadership to proactively identify risks, implement preventative measures, and promote a safe working environment across all facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive health and safety policies, programs, and best practices across the organization.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements, including OSHA, EPA, and other federal, state, and local safety standards.
- Conduct workplace risk assessments, safety audits, and inspections to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Lead investigations of workplace incidents, accidents, and near misses, determining root causes and recommending preventative solutions.
- Design, coordinate, and facilitate health and safety training programs for employees, supervisors, and leadership.
- Monitor workplace conditions and recommend improvements to enhance employee safety and minimize risk.
- Maintain accurate documentation of safety inspections, incident reports, compliance activities, and regulatory filings.
- Partner with Human Resources and operational leadership to build and sustain a proactive, safety-first culture.
- Develop, implement, and oversee emergency response plans, crisis management procedures, and business continuity initiatives.
- Serve as the organization’s primary liaison with regulatory agencies, insurance representatives, and external auditors regarding health and safety matters.
- Monitor industry trends and emerging regulations to ensure continuous improvement of health and safety programs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
- Seven or more years of progressive experience in health and safety leadership, preferably within a manufacturing, industrial, or distribution environment.
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA regulations, environmental compliance requirements, and workplace safety best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to lead safety initiatives, influence organizational change, and promote a strong culture of safety.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate data, identify trends, and implement effective solutions.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across all levels of the organization.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar credentials are strongly preferred.
