Overview:
Director of Technical Services is responsible for quality assurance, mix design management, material performance, troubleshooting and compliance with all applicable industry and DOT standards.
Responsibilities:
Strategic & Technical Leadership
- Set the technical vision and quality direction for concrete, asphalt, and aggregates.
- Align technical initiatives with company goals, operational efficiency, cost control, and sustainability objectives.
- Serve as the senior authority on materials, mix designs, and specification compliance.
Quality Assurance & Performance
- Oversee all testing, inspection, and certification programs across plants, labs, and field operations.
- Maintain standardized quality systems, procedures, and reporting across all locations.
- Review and approve mix designs, ensuring performance, constructability, and cost effectiveness.
- Lead root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and on-site troubleshooting for material or performance issues.
Innovation & Sustainability
- Drive mix optimization, material improvements, and the use of recycled or alternative materials.
- Lead continuous improvement projects that enhance durability and reduce environmental impact.
Cross-Functional & Customer Support
- Act as the senior technical liaison for customers, engineers, inspectors, and agencies.
- Support Sales and Operations with technical presentations, pre-construction reviews, and field troubleshooting.
- Partner with Safety, Environmental, and Operations to ensure compliance with all specifications and testing protocols.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and develop the Technical Services, Quality Control, and Laboratory staff.
- Build a culture of accountability, technical rigor, and continuous learning.
- Oversee training and certification programs to elevate technical capabilities across the organization.
Systems, Reporting & Compliance
- Manage laboratory accreditations, certifications, and technical documentation.
- Track and report quality metrics, mix performance, and trends to senior leadership.
- Ensure full regulatory, environmental, and safety compliance.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of progressive experience in Technical Services, Quality Control, or Materials Engineering within construction materials.
- 5+ years in a senior leadership or director-level role managing multi-plant operations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Construction Management, or related field (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to plants, job sites, and customer locations.
- Advanced knowledge of Ready-Mix Concrete, Hot Mix Asphalt, and Aggregate materials, production, testing, and mix design.
