Overview:
A long-established non-ferrous metal recycling company seeks a General Manager to lead all daily operations at one of its metal recycling facilities. This leader will oversee a team of yard staff, ensure safe and efficient processing of non-ferrous scrap, maintain equipment, manage logistics, and play a direct role in scrap metal buying from both industrial and walk-in suppliers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of the non-ferrous yard ensuring accuracy, safety, and productivity.
- Supervise yard employees including equipment operators, scale personnel, and buyers.
- Monitor grading, sorting, and preparation of non-ferrous materials.
- Maintain a highly visible presence in the yard and address operational issues in real time.
- Ensure site compliance with safety, environmental, and company policies.
- Perform onsite scrap metal purchasing from commercial vendors, contractors, industrial clients, and walk-in customers.
- Accurately identify, grade, and price non-ferrous metals based on industry specifications, commodity market trends and company margin guidelines.
- Use tools such as XRF analyzers, handheld testing equipment, and visual inspection to verify materials.
- Build and maintain strong supplier relationships while supporting revenue and margin growth.
- Ensure all scale transactions are accurate and properly documented.
- Oversee maintenance and repair of yard equipment including forklifts, loaders, balers, shears, and trucks.
- Coordinate with internal teams and third-party vendors to ensure equipment reliability.
- Maintain a clean, organized yard with efficient material flow and safe traffic patterns.
- Monitor inventory of processed materials, bins, and supplies.
- Train employees on metal identification, equipment use, safety protocols, and customer interaction.
- Develop work schedules to match labor needs with incoming/outgoing scrap volume.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Manage inbound and outbound scrap materials including industrial pickups and shipping prepared loads.
- Ensure proper documentation, secure loading, and precise weight recording.
- Coordinate closely with logistics/dispatch teams to maintain efficient movement of materials.
- Maintain OSHA-compliant work practices and lead regular safety meetings and audits.
- Identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and support a zero-injury culture.
- Ensure environmental and regulatory compliance at the site level.
Requirements:
- 3–5+ years of experience in the metal recycling industry.
- Direct experience with scrap metal buying required.
- Strong understanding of non-ferrous materials and specifications.
- Ability to lead teams in a physically demanding, outdoor industrial environment.
- Knowledge of commodity pricing, scales, yard equipment, and XRF testing tools.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
