Overview:
We are partnering with an established recycling organization to hire an experienced Scrap Metal Buyer specializing in automotive scrap, dismantled components, and salvage materials. This position focuses on building supplier networks, accurately assessing material value, and securing profitable purchases that support ongoing operational growth.
The Scrap Metal Buyer will be responsible for locating and purchasing automotive metals and related parts from a variety of regional suppliers. The ideal candidate is someone who understands scrap grades, keeps a close pulse on commodity markets, and is comfortable negotiating directly with auto shops, dismantlers, industrial accounts, and salvage operations.
Responsibilities:
- Source and purchase automotive scrap metals, engines, transmissions, catalytic converters, and other vehicle components.
- Build and manage strong supplier relationships across auto repair shops, wrecking yards, dismantlers, and commercial accounts.
- Conduct in-person evaluations to verify material quality, grade, and approximate yield.
- Track market movements, pricing trends, and competitive activity to make well-informed buying decisions.
- Negotiate pricing and purchasing terms that align with internal margin expectations.
- Coordinate pickups and inbound transportation with dispatch and yard teams.
- Ensure that all procurement activities meet company standards as well as environmental and safety requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of purchases, weights, grades, pricing, and supplier history.
- Serve as a professional representative of the company in all external interactions.
Requirements:
- 2+ years of experience in scrap metal purchasing, automotive recycling, or salvage operations (buying experience strongly preferred).
- Solid working knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous automotive metals and scrap grading criteria.
- Familiarity with pricing indexes, industry specifications, and commodity market trends.
- Strong negotiation and communication abilities with a track record of building long-term supplier relationships.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to visit supplier locations as needed.
- Comfortable working around yard environments and lifting up to 50 lbs when required.
- Reliable, self-directed, and highly organized with strong documentation skills.
