Overview:
A well-established, privately held metals recycling and automotive recycling company is seeking a Shredder Operations Manager to oversee a high-volume shredder operation at its facility. This role will lead all aspects of shredder production, downstream processing, maintenance coordination, and team performance.
This is a key leadership position within a vertically integrated operation, offering the opportunity to drive efficiency, safety, and throughput in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of a hammermill shredder system and downstream separation processes
- Manage production scheduling, throughput, and material flow (inbound scrap to finished products)
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of operators, maintenance personnel, and yard staff
- Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements
- Monitor and improve key performance metrics (uptime, yield, recovery rates, cost per ton)
- Coordinate closely with maintenance to minimize downtime and optimize equipment performance
- Manage inventory of shredder feedstock and outbound products (ferrous, non-ferrous, residue)
- Partner with commercial team on buying strategies and material mix optimization
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives across operations, safety, and cost control
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in scrap metal recycling, auto shredding, or heavy industrial processing
- Prior experience managing or supervising a shredder operation (hammermill preferred)
- Strong understanding of downstream systems (magnets, eddy current, non-ferrous recovery)
- Proven leadership experience managing production teams in a fast-paced environment
- Working knowledge of equipment maintenance practices and preventative maintenance programs
- Familiarity with safety standards (OSHA) and environmental compliance
- Ability to analyze production data and drive operational improvements
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with Drake, Newell, Lindemann, or similar shredder systems
- Experience scaling or optimizing throughput in a mid-size shredder environment
