Overview:
Reporting to the General Manager, the Operations Manager/Plant Metallurgist assumes responsibility for overseeing day-to-day operations across all shifts within the facility. This role entails supervising operations personnel and necessitates a robust background in operations management, complemented by proficient knowledge of metallurgy. The incumbent provides expert technical guidance and project management aimed at optimizing material selection and thermal treatment processes within the facility. Additionally, they uphold metallurgical integrity across all products and offer technical support to address challenges associated with thermal processing.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate in the development of product process work instructions and furnace setups.
- Engage in metallurgical evaluations, examination, and the drafting of comprehensive metallurgical reports for both conforming and non-conforming products.
- Ensure microstructural analysis adheres to relevant specifications, with meticulous digital capture, identification, storage, and processing as per established protocols.
- Conduct thorough investigations into product failures, implementing root cause analyses, corrective actions, and the disposition of non-conforming products.
- Address quality issues arising during the heat treatment process, proposing suitable corrective measures.
- Assist in training laboratory and heat treatment personnel on fundamental heat treatment and metallurgical technologies.
- Advocate for continuous quality improvement initiatives throughout the workforce.
- Contribute to the development of new processes and enhancements to the quality system.
- Conduct routine laboratory testing as assigned.
- Ensure all documentation and certifications meet company and customer specifications, endorsing compliance.
- Engage with customers to resolve complaints, quality concerns, and provide expert advice on material selection and process applications.
- Manage pricing and quoting processes for customers’ requirements.
- Generate purchase orders as necessary, ensuring quotes are competitive and suppliers are approved.
- Uphold and enhance the quality system as per market demands to meet customer quality standards.
- Actively participate in audits, facilitating access to all necessary documents for audit teams.
- Implement and maintain 5S standards.
- Ensure all operational equipment is calibrated to relevant specifications at appropriate intervals.
- Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols, conducting regular training for operators and supervisors as part of the safety program.
- Manage preventive and corrective maintenance, including planning for equipment upgrades and modifications.
- Competently perform Process and Product Approval Process (PAPP) activities at all levels, submitting accurate signed documents promptly.
Requirements:
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a heat treat engineer in heat treatment.
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science, or similar field.
- Additional 2+ years of experience in materials or metallurgical lab is advantageous.
- Demonstrated experience in production and personnel management, spanning at least 2 years.
- Familiarity with ASTM, SAE, AMS, CAT, and JOHN DEERE specifications related to mechanical testing and thermal processing is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with various thermal processing techniques, including gas carburizing, carbonitriding, FNC, induction hardening, hardening and tempering, normalizing, annealing, and stress relieving.
- Proficiency in the thermal processing of plain carbon steel, low alloy steels, tool steels, stainless steels, grey cast irons, and ductile irons.
